FBI alert on fraudsters use of GenAI

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued an alert on the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) by criminals to facilitate financial fraud.

The alert highlights the ways AI generated text, video, audio, and images are used to commit fraud along with tips on how to protect yourself.

Key recommendations include:

  • Creating a secret word of phrase with your friends or family;
  • Never sharing sensitive information or sending money, gift cards, or cryptoassets to individuals you have only ever met online or on the phone;
  • Looking and listening for subtle imperfections in images and audio to distinguish between legitimate and AI generated content;
  • Limiting the online content of your image or voice to reduce fraudsters’ capabilities to create fraudulent identities; and
  • Verifying the identity of the individual calling you by hanging up the phone, researching the number of the organization purported to be calling you, and calling back directly.

✅ Firms can review the alert to better understand how the use of AI is making financial fraud increasingly sophisticated.
